Sourcing, the process of acquiring goods and services to support an organization’s operations, has become a core capability vital to an organization’s success. This course is divided into three parts. Operational sourcing identifies the purchase function and activities, beginning with the purchasing cycle (P2P) and how it fits into the global supply chain including expediting/shortage management. As students are introduced to purchasing documents, policies and procedures, they also learn about the ethical issues often associated with purchasing and corporate social responsibility. Strategic sourcing refers to matching business with sourcing strategies, a role that is often played by a commodity and category manager. Future of sourcing focuses on several areas such as supply chain collaboration, securing innovation, global multi-tier sourcing, and enabling technologies including Industry 4.0, additive manufacturing, and blockchain with smart contracting. Students apply concepts learned with a case competition or a category/commodity sourcing project.
