The Human Biology program offers two degrees, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and appeals to students of a variety of different backgrounds or interdisciplinary interests. In these degree programs students will study how our biology is altered by both evolutionary history and by a contemporary environment that includes natural, social, and technological components.
The B.A. degree takes a holistic approach and focuses on biological foundations and intersects the study of the human organism with social sciences.
The B.S. degree is more heavily science-oriented and extends the investigation of human biology to the sub-cellular and molecular level. It places human biology in the larger context of biological and biochemical mechanisms.
The Human Biology degrees are designed around a core sequence of two interdisciplinary courses and a senior capstone course. Additionally, students take a variety of courses spanning the life sciences and historical, social, arts, and humanities disciplines. Through this broad liberal arts curriculum, students will explore diverse aspects of human biology through in-depth study in the areas of Evolution & Ecology, Sex & Development, and Health & Disease.
If you are interested in a Human Biology major, take IUB’s Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE) online. The results of the CPE will determine your placement level for your initial IUB chemistry course. For more details on the CPE, contact the Department of Chemistry at (812) 855-2700.
